Globalisation

Facebook, YouTube, Starbucks → GLOBALISATION. It affects our daily life and we cannot envision a world without it. But is it really beneficial for all people?

On the 18th and 19th of October, 2012 all A level students of our school participated in a project called “Bridging Cultures”, which is organized by the Hope Foundation. The main aim of this project is to promote intercultural relations and to inform students about the problems of developing countries.

Starting with presentations held by three representatives from Asia, Latin-America and Africa , who introduced themselves as Swastiti, Thomas and Bobby we were introduced to each of the three continents and got a glimpse of what we are going to do within the next two days. All of them were from a different cultural and ethnic background: Bobby was from Cameroon, Swastiti from Indonesia and Thomas from Costa Rica. Their presentations were really informative and we had a lot of fun listening to them. All the information we have been given were from people who have experienced the particular problems they talked about on their own, which beyond all question established a better understanding of different topics.

After receiving a first overview we could decide which country we wanted to focus on to learn more about a specific topic, therefore we divided into 3 groups: the African group, the Latin-American group and the Asian group. In each group we specialised in a different field concerning the particular country we chose. For instance, the African group talked about Malaria and the Asian group about deforestation, whereas the Latin-American group focused on the problem of drug trafficking. We learned a lot about Latin-American food, the African culture and Asian lifestyle (yes even about the ''gangnam style''). Supplementary, we were able to chit-chat with the leaders and ask questions one simply cannot ask a teacher.

Concluding the project, we had to prepare presentations on our own to inform the other students about our topic in a creative and entertaining way.

Considering the fact that the project was only lasting for two days, the workshop was quite enjoyable, interesting and of course informative by providing an insight into topics we would never face in our usual everyday-lives.
